Fossil Sands
I was doing a final cleanout of my classroom this past week, and came upon a collection of fossiliferous sands. Some of them are spectacular! Over the next several weeks I'll be adding them to the pages. Have a great 4th!

It's been a while!
I am so sorry for not posting more often. We were away on the "left coast" and I brought back a TON of samples. Go to the California page and look at Death Valley, Alabama Hills, Torrey Pines, and Del Mar to see the results. It was a great trip! If there are any of you out there from a state that is still grey, I would love a sample. It's been two weeks since anything from a new state has arrived.

Here's a First!
For the first time, I don't have a new state! In all the times that I've done this, I've had at least one sample "waiting in the wings" to go on. That wasn't the case this week. I nknew this day would come, but I wasn't ready for it. Anyway, I have some great samples from Hawaii that were just sent in. Enjoy!

This is Getting Old!
The folks who manage my site still can't get me in. I think it's time for a change.

The Site is Still Down!
The nice folks who manage my site can't figure out why I can't post. THEY can, but I can't! Very frustrating. Hang in there, if you're out there. We're working on it.

Half Way There!
This week makes 25 down and 25 to go. We've also completed New England. The sample from Portsmouth is fantastic! Regardless of which sample you view, you think you're looking at large beach rocks. In fact, the samples are only a few mm across. I'm also having a problem with the server recognizing Front Page. It refused to take my last upload. It also has thrown away all of my titles. This could be the end of Front Page for me. I hope not, I'm very comfortable with it. Hopefulyy the problem is on the server's end, and they'll correct it! Have a great week.

Sorry for the Delay!
Good grief, I forgot to post last week! A TON of new samples came in last week. All of my friends went on cruises, or to the Caymans, or to Mexico . . . and they all brought back sand! I stayed here and did all of the work! Be sure to visit the Caribbean link, and the Mexico and Costa Rica link to see some beautiful new samples. This week I am featuring the state of New York! So far I have two sides of Long Island posted. That could be it. Things are getting very busy here. Hope you have a great week.

Igneous Extrusive!
The samples that are new this week are truly spectacular! Go to "Latest Arrivals" and take a look. All three of the new samples came from lava flows. Two from Hawaii, and one from Wyoming. The stuff doesn't look real! I also am starting to create a small network of sand gatherers! That is so cool! The person who send me the sand from California told her friends, and now they are going to send sand from Tennessee and Ohio, etc. It's what I hoped would happen with the teachers on the various lists. Clear Skies. It's in the single digits here with a stiff wind.

Sand Lab
I actually got to teach the sand lab one last time last week! One of the teachers in my former school wanted to give it a try, so I took all of the Atlantic samples from the cellar and brought them in. The results can be seen at http://www.gatesscience.info/project/sand/sandlab.htm
They did a great job! We'll be finishing the lab on Monday. Other breaking news . . . the west coast is complete! Someone sent me a sample from Oregon.

All the Colors . . .
How true! The samples so far this week are spectacular! There is an almost pure white sample from a silica quarrey in Oklahoma, a green sample from a defunct(?) copper mine in Utah, and a spectacular sample of a beach glass beach from Kauai made from broken bottles! Enjoy!

24 New Samples!
I actually worked yesterday, and the secretary told me to stop by the office before I left. A great person from California had sent me 24 containers of sand from states not already covered. Thank you! I'm all set until spring. But if you have samples you want to send . . .

Size isn't Everything!
Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but for its size, it has the greatest variety of sand. Go to the "latest arrivals" page and look at the variety from this little state. There also is a new sample from Vietnam shown there. A sister of a friend of mine also sent some great images from Torrey Pines State Park in California, so go to California and click on Torrey Pines. Enjoy!

Happy 2010!
Happy New Year one and all! I guess we are entering the dreary time of the year. If you want to help out sand send an old guy some sand, now is the time to do it. With the posting of the Rhode Island samples next week, I am out of samples that people have sent me. If you can still see the ground, meaning you come from someplace warm, sonsider sending me a sample from any mid-Atlantic, or Gulf, or Orgeon state, and I'll be eternally grateful. Send a teabag-sized sample to Charles Lindgren, Gates Intermediate School, 327 First Parish Rd., Scituate, MA 02066.
